Butler Cemetery Survey

The second step in the restoration was to measure and map the graveyard so that we would know exactly what we were dealing with and who was buried there. While going through the process of recording who the residents were I came across the usual mysteries like footstones that didn’t appear to be in the correct place, etc. In addition, I began to discover stones that were lying flat and buried under the surface. This led to the thinking that it was time to start using a probe in some likely spots and sure enough, more hidden stones were discovered.

The survey phase proved to be a valuable second step because in addition to recording who was buried in the graveyard it was now clear what we had for broken stones that needed repair and fallen stones that needed to be reset.
